Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Advisory Council

The Dr. M.L.K., Jr. Youth Advisory Council represents the youth voice in the Santa Fe and Coronado neighborhoods. They are young leaders, ages 14 - 21, who live in and are affected by what happens in these neighborhoods. The Council grew out of work undertaken by students at Kennedy High School in the Spring of 2008 to improve conditions at the local community center and park.

In addition to providing ideas and feedback on NURVE programs and capital projects to the NURVE Committees and City and County policy makers, the Youth Advisory Council also helps facilitate community focus groups and encourages other youth to become involved in their community.

Their goals are to:

  • be leaders in their community
  • inspire the next generation of youth
  • succeed
  • have a voice in their community
  • recruit other youth to participate in community planning and events
  • help make their community and school better

The Council is coordinated the Richmond Community Foundation, and grew out of work undertaken at Kennedy HS through the UC Berkeley Center for Cities & Schools Y-PLAN (Youth -- Plan, Learn, Act, Now!) initiative.
