2011 Summer Mini Grants Program

In partnership with The California Endowment and Healthy Richmond, the Richmond Community Foundation was again able to offer mini-grants for summer activities for Richmond children and youth.

2011 Summer Mini Grants Program

These mini-grants were designed to give local children and youth the opportunity to acquire new skills, participate in enrichment activities and educational outings, participate in civic engagement projects, improve their health and become more physically active.

A committee comprised of members of the Healthy Richmond Steering Committee and the Richmond Community Foundation's Community Investment Committee reviewed the almost 50 applications that were submitted for the 10 available grants and are pleased to announce that the following organizations have each been awarded $1,000 Summer Mini Grants:

Arts Change will provide a series of innovative hands-on art making workshops to 40 Richmond youth ages 14-21 through their Street and Studio Program. Street and Studio offers a unique selection of classes taught by emerging and professional Bay Area artists that bridge the gap between studio and street art.

Bay Area Community Resources Adventure Bound is an outdoor education program designed to enhance teamwork, develop leadership skills, and help the youth of Richmond better understand natural environments. Twenty Richmond youth will have the opportunity to attend one day trip and three overnight leadership trips; each trip incorporating and building upon skills learned in previous trips.

Center for Human Development provides the North Richmond Summer Day Camp at the Shields Reid Community Center. Over 75 children will attend this 10 week camp which provides academic and recreational fun for children in North Richmond.

Community Housing Development Corporation, through its North Richmond Economic Development Corporation, will provide a co-ed basketball program and a co-ed dance program for children living in Barrett Terrace and Barrett Plaza.

West Coast Chess Alliance will be providing chess instruction for up to 100 children at the Kings Club Program at the Bay Area Rescue Mission; participants will also have an opportunity for tournament play.

East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, as part of its Young Artist Diploma Program, is offering a free Summer Intensive Institute. Repertoire-specific classes in music, dance, and theater/film, public performance projects, mentoring work with advancement level students, and private lessons are all part of the summer curriculum. Students will also go on three enrichment fieldtrips during the session.

Richmond Swims through its Sail Fish program, will provide free swim lessons and the opportunity to participate in swim tournaments to 75 Richmond children and youth.

RYSE Center's Dollars and Sense program will provide Richmond youth the opportunity to have fun and engaging educational and career opportunities that assist in their successful completion of high school and the acquisition of meaningful and sustainable career opportunities. In addition to daily activities, the 30 participants will visit local colleges and universities.

Urban Tilth's Summer Youth Apprentice Program will serve thirty Richmond youth in urban agriculture. By introducing young people to a structured model of learning, employment, and community service, the Program makes and holds a space in which young people can discover their own capacity as community leaders.

Youth Enrichment Strategies will provide six youth, ages 13 - 19, and their families the opportunity to participate in the Pro Teen Classic, a bass fishing tournament along the Sacramento Delta near Antioch/Oakley. While the youth are fishing in the tournament, family members will be able to go out on pontoons in the Delta and greet their children upon return.
