In honor of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., students from five Richmond schools joined parents and community members to March for Peace in Nystrom/Iron Triangle neighborhoods on January 13. This was the fifth M.L.K. March for Peace that the schools and community organized together. Approximately 400 students participated.

Students carrying handmade banners and posters assembled at the corner of Harbour Way S. and Florida Ave., and then marched down Harbour Way and into the Dr. M.L.K., Jr. Park. Following the march, students held a rally on the new sports field at the recently-renovated and reopened Park. The rally, celebrating Dr. King's birthday, included songs, essays, and speeches by youth, and special "birthday" treats. Students shared original poems, and recited portions of Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech.

Policymakers and civic leaders attended the event to support the students and be a part of the powerful community event. Dignitaries included CA State Senator (District-7) Mark DeSaulnier, John Gioia, Contra Costa Supervisor (District-1), Richmond Mayor Gayle McLaughlin, Councilmember Jovanka Beckles, West Contra Costa Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Bruce Harter, School Board Trustee Madeline Kronenberg, and National Park Service General Superintendent Tom Leatherman, among others.

The March for Peace was coordinated by the students and parents of Richmond College Prep Schools, Lincoln Elementary School, Coronado Elementary School, Nystrom Elementary School, and Leadership Public School-Richmond, in partnership with the City of Richmond, Sims Metal Management, Urban Tilth, Richmond Community Foundation, West Contra Costa Unified School District, National Park Service, Nystrom United ReVitalization Effort (NURVE), and Santa Fe, Coronado, and Iron Triangle residents.
